Ratcliffe Road surgery celebrates new status for pharmacy
Pharmacy at Ratcliffe Road surgery awarded Healthy Living Pharmacy status
Warwickshire celebrated its first Healthy Living Pharmacy (HLP) to achieve all the criteria of new national Healthy Living Pharmacy programme. Local Councillor Jacky Chambers joined staff at Atherstone In-Practice Pharmacy in recognition of this marvellous achievement.
Healthy Living Pharmacies are community pharmacies that have demonstrated set quality criteria and been awarded a quality mark. The dedicated team donned their Christmas jumpers and cheered as Cllr Chambers cut the ribbon in celebration.
This initiative, which has been funded by Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire Local Pharmaceutical Committee, is aimed at broadening the role of pharmacies, to encompass the provision of information to guide self-care and encourage healthy lifestyles.
The HLP also has a 'Health Promotion Zone' which promotes different health messages throughout the year, linking in with local and or national programmes such as Stoptober, Dry January, Be Clear on Cancer, etc.
Atherstone In-Practice Pharmacy has three trained Health Champions who all actively take part in health promotion campaigns, talk to patients about a range of lifestyle issues and (if required) signpost to local services.
Michelle Dyoss, Public Health Specialist and Healthy Living Pharmacy Lead, said “I think the main reason this pharmacy became 'the first' is due to staff commitment and enthusiasm for HLP. The team have identified opportunities for further health promotion and are making a difference to their community. Pharmacy is about more than just dispensing medicine and treating the ill; they can support you to keep well too.”
Cllr Les Caborn, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health, said: “I am delighted to see this first healthy living pharmacy launch in Atherstone. Pharmacies are at the heart of our local community and have a key role to play in responding to the health needs of local residents. Initiatives such as this will help our communities to maximise their health and wellbeing and will play an important role in improving the health outcomes of local people.”
Local Borough Councillor, Jacky Chambers, added: “It’s wonderful to have an In-Practice Healthy Living Pharmacy in Atherstone. The advice and support they are able to give will help improve the health of local people in the Borough The pharmacy team and practice have worked really hard to achieve this award and we are very proud to know that it is the first of its kind in Warwickshire. We hope to see more of these type of pharmacies in other market towns.”
